Let it Snow

Girl in Yellow

“Girl in Yellow” – Acrylic on Paper

Well, the snow has finally arrived. After much threats from weather forecasters, amateur and professional alike, the finally have their day in the sun (snow).

While negotiating the roads this morning I thought about how hard it is to actually paint snow, in any painting.

The first thing you can forget about is your tube of titanium white. Copious amounts of it won’t do the trick. Perhaps a little bit well be needed.

Snow can be yellow or blue depending on the surrounding landscape, and light source. Not an easy effect to achieve.

Similar to painting flesh in a portrait. All colours live in relation to each other, and until all of them are right – none of them are right. It’s a moving target. One false move and you have to change everything.

That’s what keeps it interesting, and probably what prompted Winston Churchill to state that he would spend the next two lifetimes learning how to paint.

You won’t find snow in these galleries but hopefully you’ll find something else. Something to remind you that life is beautiful come hail, snow or occasional sunshine.

Enjoy and stay warm.
