Playfulness

jk1

All children have a natural love of art and drawing. It’s the freedom of expression it allows and affords a mode of communications which is valid and not open to question.

This is important. At any age its important to communicate, to feel you’ve been heard and that you are not alone in the world, but most particularly important for children.

I’ve noticed that they also have a very tactile relationship with art. They love to hold it, feel its texture and physical qualities. This is something as adults we often loose when it comes to viewing any form of art.

We live in a world where we are drip fed images and information and grow to distrust our other senses, simply because we never use them.

I always encourage people who are looking at my paintings to hold them and lift them, feel their weight and quality, interact with them on the physical level.

An awful lot of our intelligence resides in the physical, visceral world. It’s good to call upon that and be mindful of it when making decisions as to what we would like to hang on our walls.

Kids are good at that kind of stuff and we can learn from them. It can be their Christmas present to us.

Speaking of which, there are beautiful gifts here for those younger family members in your life, and for the not so young. We can never afford to lose that playfulness quality no matter what our age. There is a lot more attached to it than first meets the eye.
