I watched the comedian Billy Connolly on television last night. He has a new documentary series on the subject of death of all topics.
Its something that he has been pondering he says.
As I watched, I thought how really old and small he now looks and was thinking maybe the subject matter doesn’t help his overall posture.
As ever he makes the material mildly entertaining and informative in the sense you don’t really need the information he’s imparting but it’s no great load to carry.
“Leave this world a better place than you found it”
It’s a cliché often bandied about in such programs. Someone is bound to say it at some stage and Billy didn’t disappoint.
I try to do that with my paintings I said to myself, leave them in a better place than when I first found them.
Especially in terms of the staged way I paint.
When I leave the studio the painting better be in a better place than when I first entered.
Of course I reserve the right to re-paint over all my previous days work, but that is not the point.
We need to feel we are making progress; it’s a very human need.
Some clichés become so for good reason, the hold a lot of truth, in life and in painting. Same thing.
As long as the finished work is not a mere parody of itself we will be content, hopefully not many such parodies to be found here.
Have a lovely day.
